That 205 is a bit much but the rest? Are used cars just generally expensive in the US?

Same here to be honest, if I had the choice I wouldn’t burn it either. Memories!
It’s still built like a 90s Astra though, so it’ll never be a true Golf GTi rival.

Sorry.
None of us would spend £23k on a 205 anyway. Lol.

The 205 getting 105 from a 1.6 while the 106 gets 100 from a 1.3. !?
But it looks amazing.
Also it seems that car actually has 114bhp.
A 1991 205 GTi 1.9 does 130bhp.£8,995.

See the 100hp seems perfect for the 106 but that 205 looks so fast and fun to only have 106hp.

£4k for an old Astra? That’s quite a lot, unless it’s something truly special. Do note that in most of Western Europe (this includes the UK) you’ve got things like safety/emissions inspections that aren’t the joke the US equivalents are. Add ownership or registration taxation in specific countries and add mandatory insurance and simply owning a car does cost money. Running uncollectible old cars eventually depreciate to 3 digit values as a result.

I updated my reply.
It actually has 114bhp according ti the internets.
The older 205 GTi has more power.

That thing weighs 900 kg (including convertible weight penalty) and really is a hoot to drive. It’s a subcompact released in 1983, being a subcompact it’s one segment smaller than a mk2 Golf. Outside dimensions are comparable to a modern Fiat 500, but with a usable back seat and less weight. It actually feels quick. Note that a base model had 54 hp, which is half.

I’ve been browsing the site since I opened it (using the old Top Gear postcode). looking for ideas after my TSX is paid off. So far only one Accord Type R, and it’s a 2001. Also looking at R33s and JZX cars.

Nice I knew a guy who had a 1996 one of these.
Great car, but like BMW M3s, E30s, etc... it’s finding one that hasn’t been molested and got a nest of wires where previous owners have messed about with the car.
On a car like this it’s worth getting an auto electrician and a mechanic check it over before hand.

Yeah, most of the ones I saw were horror shows. The two A70s I saw were clean, but they’re much cheaper here. I’m thinking of picking one of those up as a project car.

As a project car, your choice will be a lot more open.
I think by 2020 your choice will be more varied in type of car but not a lot of choice withing a certain vehicle model.

Yeah. I want either a red-top Honda or something with a Japanese turbo straight-6 or Toyota V8. Something like this, Clarkson and May’s opinion notwithstanding:

Or this, which I would buy now if I weren’t $9000 deep into a car loan already (it’s $9300 with the exchange rate):

I hope you get your car paid off sooner and you can get the project you want sooner.

I actually own a 205 CTI (1987) and I’m in the middle of an engine swap. 150 HP 2.0t engine from the mid 90s. Probably 0-62 mph in 7.5 or so, which is more than sufficient in a 30 year old convertible that small. But even with the stock engine (my engine was utterly, utterly worn, but it’s not my first 205 gti/cti) it was very fun.

yeah, the Carlton has serious cred and a storied history, the 205 Cabrio is rare and cool, but not the same way. That Price on the Carlton is insane, but it frankly doesn’t surprise me.

No, the last generation didn’t get rear steering here. I probably would have if it did, though. It also makes my back hurt if I drive it more than 15 minutes or so. I’m out driving it now, just stopped for coffee. So far so good.

Yes, the US has cheap new cars and expensive used ones.
The 106 and the Astra, you used to be able to get them for about half that a couple of years back (and the going rate for a normal 205 GTI or CTI was a couple of grand, not like now).
